Chief Mike Young began his law enforcement career with the North Richland Hills Police Department on May 13, 1985, after serving four years in the United States Air Force. Over nearly four decades, Chief Young has worked in every division of a police department, leaving an indelible mark with each step.
Early in his career, Chief Young demonstrated his skill and dedication, earning a transfer to the Criminal Investigations Division in 1990. This marked the first of many key assignments as he progressed through the ranks. He was promoted to Sergeant in October 1996, then Lieutenant in January 1999, and by September of that same year, he earned the rank of Captain. Over the years, Chief Young commanded various sections and bureaus, including Professional Standards, Criminal Investigations, Traffic Safety, Management Services, and Operations. Each of these roles showcased his versatility and ability to lead with vision and integrity.
In December 2013, Chief Young was promoted to Assistant Chief, where he oversaw the Operations Bureau, followed by the Management Services Bureau in 2017. Finally, in July 2023, after decades of distinguished service, he was promoted to Chief of Police—the culmination of an exceptional career.
Among his many accolades, Chief Young was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1989, the department’s highest recognition. This honor serves as a testament to his courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of our community.
